Before trivalent chromium (CR(III)) became a prevalent pretreatment for aluminum surface finishing, there was CR(VI), or hexavalent chromium. Both of these compounds contain chromium, but in different stages of oxidation. Hexavalent chromium soon became a problem as it became a known carcinogen and a priority pollutant that was soon after restricted. Because of this, a great deal of research and effort was put into finding alternatives that were as effective against environmental corrosion but also better for the environment.
